Oak Alley Plantation

In 1690 a French merchant built a trading post on the Mississippi River in what is today Vacherie, La. He had to set the trading post back a ways because of flooding. So to attract attention to his store he planted 28 live oak trees all the way to the river.

In 1838 Jacques Roman was captivated by the property. The trading post was long gone but the alley of trees were about 150 years old, the perfect spot for his plantation. It wasn’t long before it became known by everyone as Oak Alley Plantation.

The majestic live oaks today are over 330 years old. Oak Alley Plantation is visited by more than 2 million tourists a year.
